The ADHD-Overexercise Connection (Type A Women, You Need To See This)

Some of us are using exercise to compensate for feelings of inadequacy, to combat perceived flaws, as a way to drown out the noise of life, and even as a way to calm down and focus. Is it possible that a genetic neurodiversity might be triggering all of this? I've invited Dr. Thomas Puleo, a pediatrician who specializes in ADHD in adolescents, to dig into this topic. What Don't You Want to See?

Make no mistake, overexercise and under-eating are behaviors that help us to cope with uncomfortable emotions. We can put all our energy into these goals/habits easily and never have to really see what we are trying to avoid. We let our sport and our body say things about us, instead of saying it ourselves. But, what happens when we push too hard? Recovery from Overtraining Syndrome and/or Hypo...

I know I’m late to this video but wanted to say how helpful it was to me so thank you! As a 38yo male my experience is that people either can’t conceive it’s possible or don’t want to hear you have an unhealthy relationship with body image and food. Your line about not being able to sit down with friends and family for a meal really hit me hard as I have not gone to so many events because the food won’t be my regular restricted diet. I have been constantly restricting while training hard for years, not being able to sleep, poor mood, signs of hormone issues the works. I didn’t realise what an issue it was until I was plagued with injuries during a marathon training block that culminated in a horrific tendinopathy 3 weeks before race day they I’m still dealing with 6 months later. Was I “race weight” on the start line? Sure but would have much rather been there and performed better had I been a couple of pounds heavier, well rested and without pain.

05:30 - This makes SO much sense right now. Even sleeping pills are not helping. And I did notice that if I get a snack I fall right back to sleep. I would have peanut butter sandwich. Thank you. I thought that Heart Rate Variation (HRV) is an indication? However, the on-line information is all over the place.

Did you experience overheating of your body during your overtraining process? I've been dealing with that, but I'm 75% recovered from Overtraining Syndrome. Ive had this condition for 2 months now. I got it from a prolonged workout routine of high intensity workouts and undereating. I gained 11 pounds and feeling more fully since then. My original symptoms were extremely bad. I had body sweats, extreme fatigue, nausea, and a little bit of insominia, but not as bad as others had.

Im not sure whether it’s due to not having enough carbs, I have about 120-130g a day, or if im not having enough calories, im averaging about 1780-1800, (female, 164cm, 31y/o, 50kg ish if that helps). I also workout fasted, 35 minutes hiit style Pilates with weights 5 days a week. Thanks so so much for any help and advice, I really need some guidance xx

Hi, I have had this issue with all my ultramarathons and recently had to DNF at mile 60 of a 100m race. My fingers, feet and abdomen swell, my kidneys are painful, my heart rate increases even with low effort, my energy decreases and urine output decreases and eventually stops. I have tried more sodium, less sodium, increasing calories, decreasing heart rate and effort, taking extra thyroid medication, etc. did you find a fix to continue running ultras?

I’m currently about to be 36 years old and I’ve only had my period one time when I was 15. Most of my life I’ve been overweight but probably not properly nourished. I was never that active either and after countless tests I was never given any answers or suggestions as to how I can fix this. I’m certain there is a disruption in my communication system but up til this very moment I have felt so alone because most people cannot relate (or so I thought) thank you for continuing to provide this important education.

This is gold information. Thank you soo much for sharing! I’m just an average runner who bought a training plan earlier this year. A plan way ahead of my current fitness at the time. And I followed that plan to the T…. in regards to hitting target paces and miles each run, week after week. And so after 3 months of following this plan ,plus working a physically intensive job in construction and acquiring c-ptsd through narcissistic abuse, and getting a major demotion at work because of a performance drop due to my emotional stress, my body just caved in. One day I just couldn’t run the way I’d been used to. Despite a valiant effort my splits were just extremely slow. I felt like absolute garbage, and for days on end… even after stopping all training. It’s like my body completely lost the ability to recover. And it was so hard to explain this to anyone around me. Luckily I did my research and discovered the very meagerly available information about this topic and at least was able to convince myself this is what I had. But yea, it’s so crazy to me how you found this treasure trove of information about this rare sickness. Your channel deserves way more credit. Keep up the awesome work!! 😁👍

So relatable. I have been stuck in a constant cycle of increasing training volume as I need more and more for the same relief until I don't get the hit anymore, then I crash and burn and then restart when my brain craves the stimulation again. I keep telling everyone I'm quitting for good to get out of the toxic relationship I have with exercise but then my brain can't handle it and I do the shameful walk back 🙈

    • @JerrTheHooman

@eimearrosenicholl3734 well, take it from me, it's better to learn modern sooner than later. I ran myself down with 7 years of restrictive dieting and excessive exercise. I'm currently recovering from overtraining syndrome. I got some metabolic damage, weakened immune system, anemia, infertility (hopefully that's temporary), lots of injuries, etc. I had been feeling run down for a while but I kept pushing through until my body forced me to back off. Now instead of training 6 days a week for over 2 hours, I only do 3 days for an hour and do low intensity stuff every other day, like walking or light jogs

Extremely relatable. ..substance abuse(now sober), gaming-addiction, por*-addiction, shopping-addiction and 20 yrs of compulsive training. My life is still a mess 🙄 I was best in class up until college, then all went south. Never got a degree. I now live on welfare, due to a hard life. (Live in the eu) But despite all that, I have always eaten super healthy and are in VERY good physical shape. People don't understand that contradiction. I was dianosed with OCD at 10 or 11 and with ADD/ADHD at 40. 😂 The struggle is real..

I experienced OTS after 6+ years of excessice HIIT and 2+ hour lifting sessions. And it wasn't nice. I'm currently recovering. I'm female and it tanked my testosterone, sent my cortisol through the roof, led to anemia, immuno-suppression, low b12, irregular menstrual cycles/infertility, depression, chronic aches and pains and even weight gain because I was so restrictive so long, I developed a binge eating disorder. Now I'm realizing, less is more and I now have a proper 3 day a week strength training schedule and aim to get 8k + steps daily and focus on getting enough protein and whole foods and fiber and now I enjoy exercise again

The guys doing this to themselves should stop running and switch to bodybuilding. Their testosterone will rebound so hard it will be like a small steroid cycle. Once I quit running after college (D1 track), i gained 28 lbs of muscle in 8 months with mostly just calisthenics/bodyweight training. If they still want to run just do interval training or partially anaerobic runs and keep sessions under 30 mins, and the milage like 25 miles a week.

There I was training just about everyday, all sets to failure, after a poor nights sleep, hyped up on 4 cups of coffee, under eating and sessions over 60mins, walking 20k steps a day. Felt so deflated, retained water and strength just dropped.Switched to 2 cups of coffee, train every 2 days, 40 mins, 6 working sets each to failure. Eat more. Walk less. Sleep and nap more. Strength and endurance is better, pumps are insane. Trying to train to live, instead of living to train.

I have practiced martial arts for years and I knew that for full contact fights there was a price to pay. Now I run intensively and I knew that pushing it to the extreme has a price. In the end it is about risk-reward tradeoffs. I want to see what I am capable of and will push hard for a while, but like for martial arts I will quit after some time to limit any long term consequences. I look back fondly at my fights, but I have no desire for strike based fights in the future. I think it will be similar with Ultramarathons. If I manage to have some amazing races, then the effort and health cost of doing the same races again, just placing better might not be worth it.

For me it isn't how many miles i run but rather not eating enough carbs. I have a family, full time job, and train for marathons. There are times where this all gets overwhelming and dont track my eating. There are times were i start to get over trained with just 20 miles in a week vs having a high carb diet feeling the overtraing at about 90 miles a week. My biggest symptoms is just wanting junk food, feeling tired all day, not having good rest at night, night sweats, and not enjoying the run.
